Many of you are well aware by now that Brene Brown and her blog provide some of my favorite thoughts to kick around- maybe because she often seems to be about a year ahead of me in her thought process (and meltdown that was life-changing), maybe because she articulates things in a way that I hear or read and go, "YES!" I'm currently participating in a read-along that she's coordinating via her blog as we work our way through her book I thought it was just me between now and....well, my birthday-ish.
This week our reading is on empathy and, as part of that, self-compassion. Two of the elements of self-compassion as defined by Dr. Kristen Neff are the ideas of self-kindness (why IS it so much easier to be kind to our friends than ourselves anyway?!?) and common humanity (we all have our flaws and imperfections, and it's okay).
So, the homework assignment that you all get to share was to create our own "mix tape" of songs that help us focus on self-kindness and common humanity. If I've done my technology experiment right, you should be able to click and listen (as long as you can handle mp4s; I strongly encourage opening each in a new window for download). Here are mine:
