Started out like kids falling with the snow and laughing at the dark

Reverb10 for December 14:
Appreciate What’s the one thing you have come to appreciate most in the past year? How do you express gratitude for it? (Author: Victoria Klein)

As ironic as it sounds, I've worked really hard at enjoying my down-time when I'm pager-free and don't have to use an alarm clock. I've spent so many of the past years being my workaholic self, the one who feels incredibly driven to achieve (or overachieve at times) that this has represented a serious paradigm shift. When it's humanly possible, I take one day off each week completely from work (including answering emails). I spend plenty of time enjoying the great outdoors, even if it's simply on walks with Kita around the neighborhood. I've spent lots of time with my nose in books (I think I'll end up around 40 read for the year, and that's with a big slowdown since July). I've re-learned that it's okay to stay in bed until 8 on days there's nowhere I have to be. I also seem to have about a day a month that I never really "get dressed", other than putting on dogwalking or yoga clothes. In short, I've learned not just to appreciate, but to revel in, those times when I don't have to be a responsible member of society.
I express my gratitude for those opportunities simply by taking advantage of them. It's hard to do better than that.
