I know I'm a bit late this week- Friday was the end of a crazy-hectic work week, and I'm now in Colorado for a meeting for a few days. Since I've got a cold (ick...just ick...), I stayed in tonight and I'm catching up on things (now that I finished The Art of Fielding, that is, which is highly recommended).
Today I am trusting that this cold will be short-lived. At least it hit when I have a little bit of time for it- more than last week, that's certain. But still...ick.
Today I am grateful for my students. I know that I seem to say that quite a bit, but I truly mean it. I love that I get to learn things from them. I love that I push them to bring humanism into surgery and they respond enthusiastically. And I mostly love that they help me remember why I got myself into this crazy work in the first place. I know it keeps me busier than I like to be, but I wouldn't trade what I get to do with and for them for anything. And you'll notice that I almost never call it work.
Today I am inspired by the resilience I've seen, and the community rallying that is apparent, in New York and New Jersey in the wake of the storm last week. I'll add that I'm grateful that my dear NJ friends got power back a few days ahead of projected schedule. Newark mayor Cory Booker has been a local superman on Twitter, and is apparently out delivering blankets tonight. He's clearly a man of compassion. There should be more of us like that in the world.
Now listening: John Mayer "If I ever get around to living" I tried not to like his album that came out earlier this year. I failed at not-liking it. In fact, it might just be his best work since "Room for Squares."
