Here with you there's always something to look forward to

Late Friday night, but pondering things before I crash for the night. It was a bumpy travel day- not a bad one, just unpredictable.  And that means that it's particularly nice to be home listening to Tucker eat his dinner and Kita snuffle for no apparent reason.  I'm not sure what Belle! is up to (so I probably should be concerned).

Today I am trusting that my productivity this week will persist.  I had this new-found ability to push past resistance and got a number of long-standing pesky tasks handled.  I'm sitting here on Friday night and honestly got everything on my to-do list for the week done.  Don't worry, I still have a huge to-do list, it's just that this week's version got accomplished.

Today I am grateful to be home for 7 weeks- or with plans to be home for 7 weeks.  There's a small-but-real-chance I'll throw a Telluride weekend in but...this home thing is nice for a while.

Today I am inspired by connection and mentorship.  Early this week I sent a long-overdue note to my mentor from medical school, someone whom I jokingly "blame" for my career trajectory in surgery and education- and someone whom I've failed to keep in touch with the last few years.  I realized that it's only fair that he know how much I truly appreciated him as a role model and the influence that he had.  I got a wonderful message in return, including this comment from him:
"As much as I love to operate, I think teaching students and residents has actually been even more rewarding.  If I influenced you in any little way, then every time you take care of a patient I have a little ownership and it multiplies my own efforts.  "
I would like to think that shows I'm not falling far from my mentor tree because I absolutely believe this.  He made his clinical work and his job as clerkship director look like a joy every day, something that I've learned is a genuine gift.

With that, friends, it's bedtime for this girl, her dog, and her felines.  Have a beautiful weekend, and I would encourage you to send a little note to someone who has influenced your life for good.  You never know what you'll get back.
